Dewey or Genre

Down with Dewey!  This video is great because it really simplifies the biggest problems with Dewey.
  •  Young students don't know decimals
  • Lots of students don't know the author's last name
  • Doesn't promote stack browsing
  • isn't conducive to keyword searches
  • Genrification promotes the joy of discovery

More Detailed Presentation
  • This is the same librarians as the last video but I liked the details in this.
  • Signage is important
  • Weeding is important
  • keep it simple - ask the kids what they think
  • don't go down to sections that are too small

What do kids think about this?
  • If finding a book requires less work, you can count these kids in!
  • Mostly joking but yeah, they like that it's easier

Down and dirty quick how-to!
  • labeling takes the longest
  • 5 steps - Seems to good to be true.  Only information missing is how long all of this takes!
  • #1 - Look up genre and label each book
  • #2 - Plan the order of your sections
  • #3 - Shift books into their new places
  • #4 - Signage
  • #5 - Make changes in the catalog
  • #6 - Sit around and watch the Roomba terrorize your cat (actually this is optional but highly recommended since genrefying the library is so easy you will have plenty of time on your hands.)
