Not all OPACS are created equal.

(But some are darn close)

After you are done stimulating your eyes, feel free to stimulate your brain and read all about your OPAC choices.

  • Check out this slideshow for a side by side view.
  • Generally speaking, if you are comparing apples to apples (that is OPAC to OPAC) they don't seem to be many glaring differences.
  • The big difference is the add on's that Follett offers.
  • However, it's interesting to note that a lot of the "add on's are available to other OPAC users through Titlewave.
  • So you can have an OPAC other than Destiny and still integrate a lot of the Follett programs.

Questions to ask when exploring OPACS:
Anne O'Malley
  • How do those student names, pictures, email addresses, homeroom numbers, grade levels, get into the OPAC?
  • Does it need to talk to a different system?
  • Who would be in charge of uploading the new student list and photos each year?
  • In terms of researching does that OPAC only search for books and other barcoded library material or will it also search databases?
  • Does the OPAC provide OERs (Open Educational Resources)?
  • Can you create resource lists for teachers that also include websites?
  • Can students curate their own lists?
  • How many student book reviews are in your current system that will be lost with the transfer to the new system?
  • What will happen to all those great resource lists you already created for teachers
  • What will need to be sacrificed in order to participate in training for the new system?
  • How will you schedule in training teachers and students?
  • Is the system hosted on the cloud or our servers?
